Guide to using the search features of LexisNexis Academic
LexisNexis Academic is an index to documents from 5,900+ news, business, legal, medical, and reference publications. Includes 350+ newspapers (U.S. and around the world), broadcast transcripts from major TV and radio networks, state and federal case law, corporate and industry information, scholarly journal articles, and more. Full-text. Coverage: 1977 - present (varies by publication) (updated daily).
1. Getting Started:

In the GCC Library – From the desktop, double click the Online Resources icon and choose LexisNexis Academic from the Databases menu on the left of the screen.

From home – Access the Library web page (http://www.glendale.edu/library). Under Databases, click on LexisNexis Academic. You will be asked for a username and password. Your username is your student ID number. Your password is your birth date in six digit format (mmddyy) without slashes. (Example: February 14, 1975 would be 021475).
2. Searching:
Note that search screens for some of the subject areas (such as Legal Research or Medical) may look different than the screen example below depending on the information you are searching for.
- Choose one of the subjects listed: Quick Info, News, Business, Legal Research, Medical or Reference.
- Depending on your choice the screens will be different. Selections for Quick Info or News provide you with the choice of either Quick News Search or Guided Search. Guided search offers more search options for fewer, more relevant results.
- Step one on the Guided Search option requires a news category. Select from the drop down menu.
- Step two requires you to select a news source from the drop down menu.
- Step three allows you to enter up to three search terms. Select the whether to search in the full text, headline, author or caption for each search term.
- Step four narrows your search to specific dates or time periods.
- Step five is optional. You may identify a specific publication such as Los Angeles Times.
- Select Search to begin the search with your criteria.

3. Other Search Options:
- Business – You can search for Business News, Accounting Literature, Company Information, or Business Resources.
- Legal Research – You can search for Legal News, Law Reviews, Case Law, Codes & Regulations, International Legal Materials, Patent Research, and Career Information. If you’re looking for a specific case, go to Get a Case. If you don’t know the name, search by subject under Federal Case Law or State Case Law.
- Medical – You can search for information from Medical News, Medical Journals, and Abstracts (summaries) of articles.
- Reference – You can search for Biographical Information, Country Profiles, Polls & Surveys, Quotations, State Profiles, and World Almanac Information.
4. Viewing Results:

5. Printing, Saving to Disk, & Emailing:

- Printing and Saving –
- Click Print on the Document List results page shown above in Figure 2,
- Click
on the next screen to reformat the article for printing or saving as a text file. - Next, click File at the top left of the browser and select Print or Save As:
- (Be sure to save the document as a text file with the extension .txt Example: mydocument.txt).
- Emailing –
- Click Email on the Document List results page shown above in Figure 2,
- The resulting screen will ask you to type the email address you want the article sent to.
- To send the article, click Email.
