ABOUT COMMUNITY COLLEGES
What is a community college?
Community colleges are public colleges offering programs that lead to a
2-year Associate degree, transfer preparation to a 4-year college to
earn a Bachelor’s degree and certificate or associate degree programs
leading to careers, such as, office worker, chef, airline pilot or day
care teacher.
Why
should I consider Glendale Community College?
The academic program available through Glendale Community College (GCC)
is comparable to the first two years of a baccalaureate degree at most
4-year colleges and universities, including the California State
University campuses (such as, CSULA and CSUN), the University of
California (such as, UCLA and UC Berkeley) and several private
universities (such as, USC and Occidental College). Many students choose
to begin their college career at GCC and then transfer to a 4-year
college or university because we offer smaller classes and more direct
contact with faculty than many universities. You can find more
entry-level classes and more in-class assistance than many universities
are able to provide.
If you are looking for vocational training that does not require a
4-year degree, we offer Certificates in many career-related programs
designed to prepare you to begin working in your chosen career within 2
years.
In addition, GCC offers a broader range of services than many
universities, such as, ESL classes, assistance for students with
disabilities and a variety of orientation and personal development
courses. Our goal is to meet YOUR needs as you prepare to transfer to a
4-year program or enter the world of work.
What is a Transfer Program?
GCC provides an education that is equivalent to completing the Freshman
and Sophomore year at most colleges and universities and, if you
successfully complete all required courses, allows you to be accepted as
a Junior at many college and universities. The courses that you take
will depend on the college or university to which you want to transfer
and your academic major. There is a set core of courses required for
transfer to the University of California, a California State University
campus or a private college or university. The Student Education Plan
you would follow would be either the IGETC (Intersegmental General
Education Transfer Curriculum) or General Education requirements,
depending on your transfer school. In addition to these basic course
plans, GCC has “Articulation Agreements” with a number of colleges that
describe the courses that the transfer school has agreed to accept for
GCC students. For additional information, contact:
