Program
Requirements
Please note
that these are requirements for the program. Depending on
the requirements, some arrangements can be made to accommodate
potential members.
1.
Tutoring
You are
required to tutor as an AmeriCorps volunteer (on average) 8 hours
per week at one of four local elementary schools. Your goal is to
complete 300 hours of volunteer service.
The school
sites participating in the program are:
Columbus
Elementary (two blocks south of the 134 freeway Pacific Avenue
exit);
Edison Elementary (one block south of Pacific Avenue and Colorado
Blvd., near the Glendale Galleria);
Jefferson
Elementary (one block north of Glenoaks Blvd., closer
to the Burbank border);
Keppel
Elementary (4 blocks north of Glenoaks Blvd. and Pacific Avenue,
across the street from Hoover High School and adjacent to Toll
Middle School).
2.
Training
One hour of
training per week. 20% of your 300 hours—or 60 hours—must be spent
in training. Workshops/trainings are held each Friday from 1:15 to
2:15 p.m. Additional trainings outside these workshops that are
relevant to the program must be approved by the Program Director
prior to your attendance. You must be able to participate in these
trainings as they are required. These hours are counted toward
your 300 total.
3.
Pre-service Training
All members
must attend a pre-service training before beginning their tutoring.
This training will be approximately 10 to 15 hours and will take
place sometime in Mid to late September. These hours are counted
toward your 300 total needed.
4.
Parent Education Night (PEN)
Parent
Education Nights (PEN) are designed to give parents tools so that
they are able to better assist their children in homework. You will
be given help in developing these workshops during the Pre-Service
Orientation as well as throughout the Friday trainings/workshops.
These hours are counted toward your 300 total needed.
5.
AmeriCorps Service Days
Performing
literacy-related service hours during the national service days
(Make A Difference Day, MLK Birthday, and Cesar Chavez Day). These
three days of service are required. This is true of all AmeriCorps
programs across the country. No excused absences are allowed during
these days. These hours are counted toward your 300 total needed.
6.
Courses
Enrollment in
two courses are required for this program. The courses include
Social Science 101: Introduction to Urban Teaching in the fall 2006
or Winter 2007 session and Educational Psychology (course number TBA)
in the spring 2007 semester.
7.
Assessment
Although you
will be tutoring more than 7 students during the year, you must
identify 7 students that you will work with more intensely than
others and implement an assessment with each of the 7 students. You
will be provided with training to accomplish this task. These
hours are counted toward your 300 total needed.
8. Additional
Projects
During the
year, various activities arise such as conferences and workshops
that will be offered to you. Participation in these projects will
be on a voluntary basis. However, if a member is in need of hours,
they can apply these hours toward the 300-hour goal.
9. Service
Hours
Finally, you
must complete your 300 hours of service and training within the
specified time (academic year 2006-2007) to be considered a graduate
of the program.
10.
Academic Requirements
You must have
placed in Math 141 or higher for the math tutoring portion of this
program. In addition, you must have placed in English 120 or
higher. Both these requirements must be met before you are enrolled
into the program. You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 at GCC (or
another college or university, if applicable). You must maintain
this GPA throughout your time with the program. New GCC students
directly from high school must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be
eligible for the program.
