Comparative Literature major is an excellent choice for those who seek a multi-dimensional liberal arts education. The primary focus of Comparative Literature programs is the exploration of the world's literary heritage from antiquity to modern times. Comparative Literature students are introduced to various literary movements, genres, themes, methods, and traditions across national and cultural boundaries. In addition, students get to examine the interrelations and points of convergence between literature and other art forms - visual, music, film as well as interdisciplinary humanities - philosophy, history, religious studies. Furthermore, students analyze the role of literature in shaping human ethnic beliefs, social values, political persuasions, scientific progress, and intellectual trends. Programs in Comparative Literature are designed to broaden one's perspective by cultivating a deeper understanding and sensitivity toward diverse cultures and wide-ranging areas of human experience depicted in literature of various epochs. Program participants can choose from several areas of specialization and interest. Graduate students are required to complete additional coursework in a foreign language the original literary works are written and taught in. 

Program Description

Comparative Literature programs of study help individuals develop important and highly sought after research, critical thinking, writing, and multilingual skills which lend themselves well in foreign service, international trade, translating, editing and publishing, journalism, criticism, broadcasting, film, advertising, public relations, politics, and writing careers. The program provides preparation for the single subject teaching credential in English. The major is beneficial for those who have their sights set on graduate, law, or other professional schools.
