Firefighter is a term that is all encompassing and may vary to represent such occupations as entry-level cadets, municipal firemen, forest fighters, fire engineers, and fire inspectors or investigators. It may also include paramedics and hazardous waste specialists.  Firefighters control and extinguish fires, as well as protect people against injury, loss of life and destruction of property.   They conduct investigations and gather facts to determine causes of fires, explosions, and hazardous waste spills.  Building inspections to detect fire hazards and enforce local ordinances and state laws are part of their duties.  Firefighters assess situations to determine what action to take, using their knowledge of various types of fires, building design and material, chemical materials, and fire tactics and strategies. They must be prepared to respond to situations ranging from fighting fires, which involves hazardous conditions and long, irregular hours to knowing and performing medical emergency procedures.  These rescue workers are able to handle fire apparatus and equipment and work as a highly organized team. The work is both mentally and physically demanding therefore training and drilling is imperative to prepare for emergencies.
