FITNESS SPECIALIST

Career Summary

Fitness Specialists coach and instruct groups or individuals in such activities as aerobics, sports, and the fundamentals of exercise. They plan, organize, lead, instruct, and direct fitness and wellness programs or classes and inform individuals or groups. They demonstrate techniques, observe participants and instruct them of corrective measures to improve their physical skills. Fitness specialists may assess their clients’ level of physical fitness and help set and reach obtainable goals.   The specialist’s objective is to keep clients injury free by teaching and demonstrating proper exercise techniques and body movements as well as correct uses of gymnastic and training apparatus found in gyms and related to sports. However, they may also give first aid to injured persons, treat minor injuries and give massages to relieve soreness and strain. They analyze and evaluate a client’s physical condition, monitor weight, and even provide nutritional recommendations. Some identify health risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol.  Fitness Specialists may keep records to analyze progress towards fitness.  Sessions may include such activities as aerobic exercises, stretching, walking, and nutritional/lifestyle workshops.  Some specialists are trained to design personalized exercise programs and establish methods of health behavior, therefore being a personal coach.  They encourage and motivate people of all ages from young children to the elderly. Whether fitness specialists works with an individual or with a group, their primary responsibility is to teach, formulate, design, and conduct educational programs and establish methods of health behavior for their clients.

Program Description

GCC students may choose to complete a certificated program or an Associate of Science Degree in Fitness Specialist. The certificate program prepares students to work in various fitness leadership positions in the health/fitness industry or to be self employed in health /fitness training and consultation. The program emphasizes the relationship of human physiology, exercise training, lifestyle modification, and disease prevention distinguishing between the needs of healthy persons and those with health challenges. The program is based on the guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine. With prevention a crucial component in the emerging field of Kinesiology, this program has been developed to provide specialized educational and practical experience by providing both classroom instruction and internship. 

Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor’s degree should consult with an academic and/or transfer counselor to discuss university transfer requirements.
