This section is divided into three areas:

1) General Information

2) Eligibility to Apply

3) Remediation Plan

General Information

Students must be given approval prior to enrolling in ANY nursing class.  The Nursing Program has more applicants than can be accommodated.  Our selection process follows the guidelines established by the Statewide Nursing Prerequisite Study and the California Community College Chancellor's Office.

The criteria for application are listed below (see "Requirements to Apply").  However, the final method of selection imposes higher standards through the Prerequisite Study.  A  combination of overall GPA, core science GPA, Freshman English GPA, and any documented repetition of core science classes is usedIndividual applicant scores in each of these areas are entered into a weighted statistical formula which came from the statewide study of nursing student success.  Each score is weighted relative to its mathematical significance and interacts with other scores in the formula.  Because all scores interact, it is impossible to say concretely what scores are needed in each individual area.

When you apply to the Department and your file appears to be complete you will be notified to this effect.  The application then moves to the Associate Dean and/or Admissions Committee for further review of transcripts and paperwork.  IF all is in order, the scores listed above will be sent to our Research Department to be entered into the formula.

The formula produces a score reflecting the percent likelihood that a student will be successful in the nursing program.  Using these criteria will help us enroll students who are most likely to complete the program and help alleviate our severe nursing shortageThis formula resulted from a statewide study involving more than 5,000 nursing students in over 20 community college districts.

The pool of eligible applicants resulting from this method is  very strong academically.  However, there are still too many applicants for the seats available.  By law we are not allowed to apply any more criteria at this point and all selected students must be chosen randomly - we use the lottery.  We draw names and fill our seats in order that the names are selected from this eligible pool of applicants.

Remediation Plan

Effective Spring 2007

If you have been notified that you are not eligible to enter the Nursing Program because your final score from the prerequisite formula was below a satisfactory level, you can remediate in an attempt to improve your score.  The plan must be completed at Glendale Community College with no exceptions. The remediation plan must be completed prior to re-applying to the Program.

Remediation plans will be individualized based on your transcripts and needs.  This is intended to provide you with a stronger foundation before entering the rigor of the nursing program.  It is your responsibility as a student to notify the Department of Nursing of your status, that you are signing up to complete a remediation plan, and to update the department upon completion of your plan.  Upon completion you will be moved form the ineligible status you are currently in to an eligible status and then will be included in the next random selection of qualified applicants.

Step 1 – notify the Department of Nursing in writing that you plan to see a counselor and complete a remediation plan.

Step 2 - make an appointment with one of the nursing counselors.  Donna Capka, Patricia Djambazian, and Yeranui Barsegyan routinely counsel pre-nursing students.

Step 3 – The counselors will outline an individualized remediation plan which must be completed at Glendale Community College.

You may be asked to take the Glendale Community College assessment tests in the Assessment Center as a foundation to determine specific needs based on your current ability level.

At a minimum this plan will require remediation in subject materials you may have needs in and the course work must be completed at Glendale Community College.

You will be required to take CABOT 182 (Medical Terminology) at Glendale Community College

Complete a state certified nursing assistant program.  This is not offered at Glendale Community College and it will be your responsibility as a student to locate a program, complete the program, and provide verification.

Step 4 - Stay in contact with your academic counselor and the Department of Nursing updating them on your progress.

Step 5 – Upon completion of your remediation, you become eligible to be included in the pool of candidates from which the random selection for admissions occurs. Completing the plan does not guarantee a space in the program.
