Nursing is a dynamic, demanding, and exciting discipline, which offers many opportunities and lifelong rewards to the men, and women engaged in its practice. Nursing service is provided in a wide variety of settings to people of all ages and in all socioeconomic circumstances. Endless possibilities exist for the nursing graduate who wants to explore career options in traditional and nontraditional roles.

HISTORY & PRACTICE OF NURSING
NS 250
provides an overview of the historical foundations of nursing, contemporary opportunities and issues in nursing, current issues in healthcare, and how these impact nursing practice and its contributions to the health care system. NOTE: Open to ALL GCC students

BASIC ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY
NS 255 is designed to provide an overview and introduce the novice healthcare provider to the basics of electrocardiography (EKG). NOTE: This course is intended for nursing students, nurses, EMT students, EMTs, or individuals working in health care settings who have sufficient background knowledge to master the content and concepts.

NURSING LABORATORY
NS 260 provides an enrichment opportunity for students who are enrolled in the registered nursing program. PREREQUISITE: Selection for enrollment in the Registered Nursing Program.
 


 FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Starting Tuesday, 9/2/2008, we will no longer mail out application forms as it is already too close to the deadline. The forms will continue to be available at the Department during office hours:
               9/1 Monday - Labor Day *CLOSED*

               9/2 Tues. to 9/5 Fri. -  8am to 4:30pm


The office will close promptly Friday at 4:30pm. PLAN AHEAD! Applications will be collected for all students here by the deadline date and time. No late applications will be accepted.

Be diligent about completing all application information and providing all requested document. Incomplete applications will render the applicant ineligible to be in the pool.


Print out the CHECKLIST to make sure you have ALL the requirements prior to submission.

ATI (Assessment Technologies  Institute) was recently granted approval by the Chancellor's office for their Test of Essential Academic Skills or TEAS. The GCC Nursing Department will be using this diagnostic test effective Fall 2007 for students entering Winter/Spring 2008.

Effective Fall 2007
, selected students are required to pass a diagnostic assessment testing to determine readiness for enrollment into the RN program.  Details will be provided at the time of the selection process.

Students who do not pass this test will not be eligible to begin the  program and will be required to complete additional pre-nursing course work.

Nursing Programs offered at GCC - Use the Nursing Program Overview to see available Nursing Programs.  THEN, click on the specific Program in which you are interested.  This page will briefly describe the Program and the sequence of classes it offers.  More detailed course descriptions (Course Descriptions) of all approved classes can be accessed by that link at the bottom of each program description page.

Students New to GCC – The Counseling Assistance link describes and provides a schedule for our counseling workshops.  If you want to know if you are eligible to apply the Eligibility to Apply link will be helpful.

Career Exploration/Is Nursing the Career for ME?  Use the FAQ link to find answers to frequently asked questions about nursing and Associate Degree Nursing as well as a list of personal attributes that will help you assess if nursing is right for you.  The Licensure link describes the licensure process and legal ramifications for the practice of nursing.  The costs involved in being a nursing student are estimated in the Cost of Nursing School. Nursing Specialties and Career Links provides you with a description of common nursing specialties and helpful links for further research.  Wondering about your Math skills?  Link to Math Skills for sample items.
