An Invitation to Community College Students Preparing to Transfer to the BSN Program at CSULA
PRE-BACCALAUREATE TRANSFER OPPORTUNITY: Glendale Community College and three other community colleges are participating with California State University, Los Angeles in a ground-breaking partnership. CSULA has a generic nursing baccalaureate program whose enrollment is impacted. Of the students admitted to the nursing program at CSULA, almost one-half have completed their prerequisite sciences and general education classes at a community college. The extent to which CSULA students have used the opportunities afforded them by the community college system seems significant. In an attempt to efficiently and economically promote baccalaureate education in nursing, Glendale Community College and L.A. Trade Technical College have established a partnership with CSULA. Students intending to apply for the nursing program at CSULA can take their prerequisites and the first year of nursing at one of the participating community colleges and then transfer for advanced nursing coursework to CSULA. This program began in the Fall of 2002 and the students who enrolled were selected by the CSULA School of Nursing and referred to Glendale or one of the other participating colleges for enrollment in nursing classes. Applicants to the School of Nursing at CSULA must meet all the criteria required of generic nursing student applicants at that school. Seats at GCC for this option are limited. This cohort of students begins only in the summer/fall of each year. The planned sequence for this option is shown in the accompanying table.
