GLENDALE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Teaching American History Grant 2004-2007

COHORT III

Dear 5th, 8th, and 11th Grade Teachers,

Glendale Unified School District has been awarded a second, three-year, Teaching American History Grant (TAHG). The TAHG is recruiting teachers of American History in grades 5, 8 and 11 to participate in the grant’s professional development program.

Objective of the TAHG: The purpose of this grant is to increase knowledge and understanding of traditional American History, improve instruction in American History, and improve instruction in using American History as a vehicle for increasing student literacy and achievement.

Design and Benefits of Participating in the TAHG:

Teachers will receive a $1,500 stipend ($500 in December, 2006 and $1,000 in September, 2007) for complete participation in the TAHG.

Teachers will receive approximately $300 over the two years to attend grant approved conferences/workshops.

Cohorts of 20 participating teachers will be created each year of the grant. Teachers will be asked to make a one-year commitment.

Glendale Community College (GCC) professors and Japanese American National Museum staff will provide rich, in-depth American History content and historical research methods through monthly presentations.

Other partnerships may include Facing History and Ourselves, L.A. County TAHG (LACOE), TCI (History Alive!) and California History-Social Science Project.

Participants will attend a 5-day summer History Camp. Choose between the following: June 26-30, August 7-11-Topic-Migration, and August 21-25.

Curriculum coach and participating teachers will collaborate through coaching and feedback, Lesson Study, lesson and unit plan development, and other collaborative activities.

The TAHG will supply participating teachers with professional and instructional materials.

A steering committee will be formed with representatives from the partners (Glendale Community College, Japanese American National Museum), the district, schools, parents and students.

Commitments and Responsibilities:

Be willing to commit for one year (June 2006 to June 2007).

Attend monthly after school sessions (approximately 3-4 hours, up to ten times a year).

Attend two full-day sessions during the school year (substitutes will be provided).

Attend a 5-day summer History Camp that will be set up by the grant. Dates previously listed.

Develop, teach, and analyze lessons in American History based on California State Standards that may be put on-line for use by all teachers.
