DIETETICS

The Dietetics major provides students with training in normal and therapeutic nutrition, Biological and social sciences, Food sciences and management. Career opportunities include clinical dietitian, consultant, community nutritionist, food service manger in hospitals, airlines, restaurants, government inspector in food industry and research/development. Below are some examples of the lower division courses required for the major.

Nutritional Sciences

Physiology & Metabolism focuses on the biochemical and physiological study of nutrient utilization as well as the study of food prosperities and processing of food materials

Dietetics prepares students for a career as a Registered Dietitian (RD).  RD's translate the science of nutrition into practical applications for individuals and groups in clinical, food service, or community settings.  Graduates of this program must also complete Dietetic Internship and pass a national examination in order to become a RD.  See the American Dietetic Association website for more

ENGL 101, 102

Physiology and Metabolism: at least 6-7 semester units selected by the student from fields such as literature, history, foreign language anthropology, psychology, sociology, philosophy, economics, political   science, etc.  IGETC certification will satisfy this requirement. 
Dietetics:  The following courses are required as part of the pre-professional curriculum for the Dietetics Track, including  a) accounting, b) economics, and c) Psychology I, Sociology 1 or 3, or Anthropology3.

Both Physiology & Metabolism and Dietetics require one semester of general chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one semester of calculus, and one semester of statistics.
