GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
GENETICS

The science has its roots in the fundamental human needs of health, nutrition, and environmental control, and it provides opportunities for study in the basic biological fields of genetics and cellular and molecular biology. Undergraduate students majoring in this field prepare for careers in biomedical research, medicine or dentistry, biotechnology and genetic engineering, industrial microbiology, and agricultural or environmental sciences, among others. The courses presented by the department lead to a Bachelor of Science degree and depend heavily on preparation in chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics. These courses provide preparation for further advanced study leading to the doctorate or for careers in microbiology or biotechnology. In the last two years, most courses are in bacteriophages, protein secretion, kinetics and mechanics of viral growth, and DNA theory, usually with a concentration in one area. Below are some examples of the lower division courses required for the major.

UC Berkeley
