Music is the muse for Angie Alberto and helps fuel her passion for engineering. Scarlet Galvez thrives on improving herself and is proud of her association with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at GCC.
Together they are just a few of a growing number of young women making the foray into engineering with an eye on the future and a work ethic that is like a balancing act for all the challenges they face.
From lengthy commutes that get them to school not long after the sun rises to days that turn into late nights, Alberto and Galvez take on these challenges with smiles on their faces and determination in their hearts to succeed and to help grow the legion of Hispanic female engineers. “My participation in SHPE at GCC has been an important part of my success as I have met many Hispanic engineering majors from around the country,’’ Galvez said. “SHPE has allowed me to find and have a support group of like-minded students at GCC going through similar obstacles.’’
