Economics Course Descriptions

ECON 101 Principles of Microeconomics
ECON 101 is an introductory course focusing on choices of individual economic decision-makers. Topics include scarcity, specialization and trade, market equilibrium, elasticity, production and cost theory, market structures, factor markets, and market failure.
ECON 102 Principles of Macroeconomics

ECON 102 is an introductory course focusing on aggregate economic analysis. Topics include: market systems, aggregate measures of economic activity, macroeconomic equilibrium, money and financial institutions, monetary and fiscal policy, international economics, and economic growth.
ECON 102H Honors Principles of Macroeconomics

ECON 102H is an introductory course focusing on aggregate economic analysis. Topics include market systems, aggregate measures of economic activity, macroeconomic equilibrium, money and financial institutions, monetary and fiscal policy, international economics, and economic growth. This course is enhanced in one or more of the following ways: students use a macroeconomic computer model to explore macroeconomic policies and explain the theoretical basis of the results achieved in the computer model; students write an essay critically assessing macroeconomic policies relative to different political viewpoints; and students complete writing assignments using critical thinking skills to assess macroeconomic policies.
ECON 111 Economics History of the USA

ECON 111 is a history of the economic development of the United States from its settlement to the present. Emphasis is placed on the growth and development of economic institutions, slavery, reconstruction, work, the industrial revolution, workers’ movement, and U.S. imperialism. This course meets the California State requirement in American History. Note: This course may not be taken for credit by students who have completed History 116.
ECON 127 Introductory Statistics for Economics and Business
ECON 127 is a one-semester course designed for economics, business, and social sciences students whose major requires a course in statistics. Topics in this course include the nature of statistical methods, types of data, introductory probability, sampling theory, experimental design, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and decision making. Emphasis is placed on the application of statistical concepts to economic, business and social science data, the development of statistical reasoning, and the interpretation of results in an economic, business, or social science context.
ECON 170 Introduction to Global Studies
ECON 170 is an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Global Studies, including the history of globalization, and economic, political, social, cultural and ecological developments related to the process of globalization. Students evaluate topics such as NGOs, the global economy, and transnational population trends. Note: This course is cross-listed with GEOG 170 and POL S 170.
