Financial Assistance for AB 540 Students

The AB 540 financial assistance projects at GCC are numerous and are designed to help students succeed.

Below is detailed information about each type of assistance and contact information for each specific type of assistance.

Alternative Service Scholarship
Making College Happen Scholarship

These three different scholarships are for AB 540 students who are not eligible for traditional federal and state financial aid programs. Additionally, students must have demonstrated some form of advocacy for immigrant rights or educational equity for immigrant families.

Requirements to apply for this scholarship are:

  • Must have completed 12 units at GCC;
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5;
  • Must be first generation immigrant and first general of their family to attempt college.
  • Must complete a GCC Scholarship application at any point during the regular academic year.

There is only ONE of each scholarship each year (for a total of 3) and they are awarded near the end of the academic year (in the spring semester). Please contact Greg Perkins( at 818.240.1000, extension 5571 for more information.

GCC AB 540 Community Service Scholarship
These scholarships are designed to assist AB 540 students involved in campus clubs, campus activities, or community service at local non-profit organizations.

Incoming high school students as well as those who are current students qualify for these scholarships.

Requirements to apply for this scholarship are:
  • Proof of completion of community service or involvement in the past 2 years in community service activities OR any special circumstances;
  • A transcript (for high school students);
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5;

These scholarships are awarded twice a year, just before the start of the fall and spring semesters. Amount and number of scholarships awarded vary. Check the deadline for each semester by contacting Greg Perkins at 818.240.1000, extension 5571.

3. College Transcripts (unofficial is fine) if you are a current GCC student OR a high school transcript if you are a new GCC student.

V.O.I.C.E.S. Service Scholarship

GCC also has an AB 540 campus club for students called V.O.I.C.E.S. (formerly known as Voces del Manana). V.O.I.C.E.S. stands for Voices Organizing Immigrant Communities for Educational Success).

These scholarships are for service to GCC and to VOICES and are awarded at the end of each semester. Amount and number of scholarships depend on the funds raised that semester from club activities.

GCC General Scholarships

GCC also awards approximately 350 scholarships each year. These scholarships are based on student activity and involvement, major, academic achievement, etc. All AB 540 students are encouraged to complete an application since they may potentially qualify for these scholarships.
