The ESL Test is necessary for initial placement into any Credit ESL class or any other courses requiring an English/ESL skill level. The exam consists of Listening/Speaking, an Essay, and Grammar. This test is given by appointment only. Appointments must be made in person.
This test will measure your ability to comprehend English, understand word meaning in sentences, identify correct use of grammar, and understand spoken English language conversations.
The ESL Test is required for any student who wants to take ESL courses. This is a paper/pencil test including Listening/Speaking, an Essay, and Grammar. Please allow up to 3 hours for ESL.
Review the sample test before taking the test. Students who do not place into Credit ESL will be automatically placed into ESL Noncredit.
Students will receive their placement results via MyGCC within 2 working days.
If you place into Noncredit ESL, please see a counselor or Assessment staff. You will need to complete a Non-credit application to take Non-credit ESL courses. For more information, please see Non-credit Assessment.
