The Crossroads of Privilege and Oppression

All are welcome to learn about the complexities of intersectionality and explore both privilege and oppression across co-existing identities.

 

Intersectionality is the interplay of various identities that can make up an individual. Prejudice refers to internally held biases, which are preconceived opinions, thoughts, and emotions about others, groups of people, or even the groups to which they belong. Oppression is the systemic and institutional abuse of power to maintain one group of people as superior over another.

 

With an open mind, join the Pride Center and explore your experiences of privilege and oppression.

National Coming Out Day

The Pride Center is recognizing National Coming Out Day on Thursday, October 10th from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. It’s important for our students who are LGBTQ+ and their allies to know that they are welcomed and celebrated.

 

The Pride Center will be hosting the DWH (Dance With Harout) Performance Company to recognize that the LGBTQ+ community exists on campus and to celebrate with dance and music. Come watch their performance and learn more about the services available at the Pride Center. 

 

As with all our events, allies are always welcome. Show your peers, colleagues, and students your support by attending these events.

EMT Edition: The ABCs of LGBTQ+

All first responders and those providing medical care (future firefighters, future physicians, future nurses, etc.) are encouraged to attend this session to learn about inclusive practices and standards of care that meet the needs of the LGBTQ+ community.

 

We will discuss health disparities in the LGBTQ+ community as well as how to navigate the complexities of treating an LGBTQ+ patient. Learn the many ways in which you can show allyship on the job!

The Pride Center will be hosting a Halloween-themed “Let’s Chat." If you’d like to wear a costume, you’re more than welcome to. Though costumes are not required as long as you come with an open mind and a festive spirit!

Each session begins with a brief presentation on a topic, followed by a group discussion. All can have the opportunity to share their experiences, if they wish to do so.

Inclusive Sex Education Jeopardy

The Pride Center sponsors Planned Parenthood for this educational social gathering where all students learn about inclusive sex and gender education through a jeopardy game!

 

Planned Parenthood staff will be available to answer your questions regarding safe sex practices, condom use, and any other related matters.

Thanksgiving Luncheon for students who are LGBTQ+

The Thanksgiving Luncheon is an opportunity for our students who are LGBTQ+ and their allies to have a meal together and explore what self-care can look like during the holidays. It isn’t always easy to be around family when you don’t quite fit in. Join us for lunch and share your experiences. Let’s go home for the holidays with a plan on managing the emotions that can come up. Please RSVP on our website if you plan to attend so we can plan for enough food and refreshments.
