Each semester, a number of faculty offer service learning to their students through different courses and programs. Service learning gives students an opportunity to put their knowledge to work by having students do community service activities that is related to their coursework. In addition, students are required to reflect on their project and to connect the course instruction to the community service.
One definition of service learning that is commonly used (and used at GCC) is the one developed by the American Association of Community Colleges:
Service learning combines community service with academic instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking and personal and civic responsibility. Service learning programs involve students in activities that address community-identified needs, while developing their academic skills and commitment to their community.
With this definition in mind, faculty have integrated community service with learning throughout the curriculum on campus.
Students who need to complete service learning hours must complete forms and meet deadlines. We have provided a PowerPoint presentation that explains the signing up process. Please click here to download the Service Learning Powerpoint Orientation.
