Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
Institutional Learning Outcomes are the knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes that students are expected to develop as a result of their overall experiences with any aspect of the college, including courses, programs, and student services. ILOs are designed to help guide individual departments and disciplines in the development of learning outcomes for programs and courses and services, and to help shape the decision making processes of Glendale Community College.
ILOs are the collective expression of the learning environment at Glendale College. Each program must contribute to at least one ILO.
The following are rules of thumb when establishing or connecting SLOs, PLOs, SSLOs, and GELOs to ILO(s):
- each program need NOT fulfill every Institutional Outcome;
- each course within a program need NOT fulfill every program learning outcome;
- each course must meet at least one of its program’s established student learning outcomes;
- a course should meet every one of its stated student learning outcomes.
Upon successful completion at Glendale Community College, the student will be able to:
communicate clearly and apply knowledge utilizing writing, speaking, presenting and other modes of communication;
2. Mathematical Competency/Quantitative Reasoning
apply, interpret, and understand mathematical and quantitative concepts;
3. Information Competency (Literacy)
recognize an information need, or define a research topic using library and other resources to locate, evaluate, and use information or data in an ethical and legal manner;
4. Critical Thinking
analyze problems and apply knowledge; collect, synthesize, and evaluate ideas, information and data to develop arguments and derive conclusions;
5. Global Awareness and Appreciation
recognize and analyze the interconnectedness of global, national, and local concerns, analyzing cultural, political, social and environmental issues from multiple perspectives, and to appreciate similarities and differences among cultures;
6. Personal Responsibility
demonstrate and apply decision making skills and develop the capacity for self-understanding and recognize lifestyles that promote physical and mental well-being.
ILOs were revised by the LO Committee in the Fall of 2014 and formally adopted by the Academic Senate in the Spring of 2015. The ILOs were reviewed and the Communication ILOs revised in the Fall of 2019 due to redundancy.
Critical Thinking Findings
In the Fall of 2015 a Critical Thinking Institutional Learning Outcomes Task Force was put together to review all PLOs that were linked to Critical Thinking. Through the work of the task force the Critical Thinking Report Findings discovered key issues and made suggestions based on the findings. The LO Committee discussed these in the Spring of 2016 and will start to evaluate these at the division level. Some of the suggestions include surveys to staff and students about Critical Thinking and what it means to them and learning outcome workshops that incorporate critical thinking.
