To be eligible to teach Distance Education courses at GCC (Asynchronous, Synchronous/Remote,
Hybrid, Hyflex, or Proctored Online Courses), instructors must be both DE Certified
and DE Instruction eligible. Eligibility is maintained through the annual completion
of negotiated Glendale Annual DE Recertification professional development (GADER):
Three hours for full-time faculty and two hours for part time faculty.
DE Certification through Equivalency
According to CoDE and approved by the Academic Senate and Guild, instructors may become
DE Certified by completing @ONE's Introduction to Asynchronous Online Teaching & Learning
(IAOTL, formerly IOTL) or by Equivalency. Types of Equivalency are described below.
If you believe that your DE Certification from another institution is the same or
better than GCC's requirement (IAOTL), please see instructions below*
The District assigns 100% Online, Synchronous Online Instruction, Hybrid, Hyflex,
and Proctored Online Classes only to instructors who are DE Certified and DE Instruction
Eligible. The process for obtaining emergency DE Certification is as follows: Completion
of GCC’s in-house @ONE “Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning” taught by a
GCC @ONE certified teacher using course materials developed in conjunction with @ONE’s
Teach-the-Teacher program. This 6-week, online course is offered once per primary
semester OR successful completion of @ONE's four-week "Introduction to Asynchronous
Online Teaching and Learning" plus the GCC DE Policies and Procedures quiz.
Intent To Certify
Newly hired faculty who are not yet DE Certified according to the standard adopted
by Glendale Community College’s Academic Senate, or to its equivalent, and who are
not yet on the GCC payroll, may submit the Intent to Certify form and will then have their first primary semester and one consecutive short session
to complete GCC’s Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning (IOTL) or its equivalent through @ONE (IAOTL) or another college. (GCC may not offer the DE Certification course during intersessions
and faculty may need to find an alternative IOTL course). During this time, newly
hired faculty may teach in Distance Education modalities. After this first primary
semester and one consecutive short session, if the newly hired faculty have not completed
DE Certification training according to the standard adopted by Glendale Community
College’s Academic Senate, the District will no longer schedule them to teach in DE
modalities until they have completed such training.
Do you believe your current DE training from another institution is equivalent to
the above DE Certification by Coursework or Performance? If so, please contact the
DEC at de@glendale.edu
