Faculty Unit Credit Request

One way to advance your salary at GCC is to utilize the Faculty Unit Credit Request.

Each full-time or adjunct faculty member, who has at least a Master’s Degree, may earn credits for advancement on the salary schedule through major leadership, public performance, publication, and continued education. please see Article VIII, Section 10.D of the GCC faculty contract for further information.

Pending approval, every 8 excess hours of professional development can equal up to 1⁄4 of a semester unit. Thus, 32 hours could be the equivalent of 1 unit. To learn more about other ways in which one may advance on the salary schedule, please see Article VIII -> Section 10.D of the GCC faculty contract. Contact Donna Diamond in Human Resources for individual salary information.

If you want to ensure that your units are eligible for salary advancement prior to engaging in an activity, you may fill out the  Faculty Unit Credit Request Pre-Approval form. Submit this form directly to the appropriate Vice President. (Dr. Michael Ritterbrown for Instructional faculty and Dr. Pau Schlossman for Counseling faculty). The appropriate Vice President must provide approval on this form and return it to the faculty member. Upon completion of the approved coursework, the faculty member must attach this form to the Glendale Community College District Faculty Unit Credit Request form and submit both forms to the Office of Faculty Development (facdev@glendale.edu)  along with required grade report or transcripts.

To submit your request, fill out the Faculty Unit Credit Request form and submit it with the appropriate verification to facdev@glendale.edu, the Office of Faculty Development (Sierra Vista 105 on the Verdugo Campus), or to the Faculty Development mailbox. Please be sure to detail the activities that you wish to have reviewed, and please explain the college duties or instruction areas toward which this work applies. Please use as many sheets as necessary, and be sure to attach any supporting documentation. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for the initial step of this process. When submitting digital transcripts, please submit an accessible, unlocked file.

Please submit no later than September 10 for the October 15th submission date or March 10th for the April 15th submission date. Please be sure the information is complete. The office of Faculty Development can only accommodate requests up to 3 years prior to the date of submission. Beyond the three years, all hours which have not already been reported will be forfeited.

Once the Faculty Development office has verified that these hours have not been used for Flex, all information will be forwarded to the appropriate VP of Instruction for review and approval. Approval of units for advancement on the salary schedule will be granted only for those hours that apply to activities that directly relate to classroom practice, including distance education, or to an instructor’s field of study. Those approved hours will then be forwarded to the office of Human Resources.

Per Guild contract (Article VIII Section 10.I) employees who wish to qualify for a change in salary classification for the current fiscal year must have their proposed Faculty Unit Credit hours signed off on by the Faculty Development Coordinator and their respective V.P., and those submissions must be on file with the office of Human Resources no later than October 15 (Fall submission deadline) and April 15th (Spring submission deadline).

Please remember that you may not use any hours that were already utilized to satisfy a Flex obligation.

Please contact Tiffany Ingle facdev@glendale.edu with any questions.

Please contact Donna Diamond in Human Resources for updates and individual salary information.

Please contact the GCC Payroll department for further information about retro checks.

Flex hours completed in excess of one’s requirement may be utilized for salary advancement so long as they pertain directly to the faculty member’s discipline and practice. Since faculty are paid for completed flex hours, faculty cannot submit the same hours/units for flex and salary advancement.

Do not submit Faculty Unit Credit hours with your completed flex hours transcript.

If your excess hours were submitted within the VRC, please “Archive” them on your transcript so that they do not appear on your final Completed flex report hours. If you want to obtain verification for hours completed in the VRC, find the completed activity and click “View Certificate”.

Please view the guide or attend a training session for further assistance with these steps.
