Which course is right for you?

English C1000

English C1000 is a 4-unit course designed to prepare you for writing in the university setting and for a variety of contexts beyond the classroom. In this course, you will practice critical thinking, reading, and writing by applying a variety of strategies that enhance your work as a communicator, citizen, and scholar.

Through reading and discussion of selected works, you will learn to

  • identify arguments and
  • analyze texts for purpose, audience, context, and overall composition.

Through writing, you are invited to contribute to an academic conversation and learn to position your ideas in relation to the ideas of others. You will also develop skills in

  • argumentation,
  • source integration,
  • analysis of evidence,
  • college-level research methods,
  • information literacy, and
  • citing according to academic conventions.
English C1000E is a 4.5 unit course with the same curriculum and learning goals as English C1000, yet it includes a co-requisite workshop/lab component (0.5 additional units) dedicated to directly supporting your work in the regular lecture class. With the lab portion of the course, you will gain additional practice in writing moves, reading strategies, editing skills, research methods, and critical thinking designed to enhance your success as you attempt transfer-level English. The lab also gives you a chance to ask questions, practice, and get additional coaching from your professor, tutors, and peers in ways that go beyond the regular C1000 course. This supportive community in the lab setting will enhance your confidence, success, and skills as you navigate the work of the lecture portion of English C1000E.
