The Business Information Worker (BIW) Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare students for entry-level office and administrative support in a variety of job positions, including general office clerks, retail salespersons, customer service representatives,receptionists, and information clerks, hospitality and tourism, financial services and real estate. Students can be expected to learn the following: Basic oral and written communications, Basic computer application skills, including beginning Excel, Word, and Outlook, The fundamentals of computer systems, Critical thinking and problem solving skills, Construct and modify solutions to very simple personal, educational or business needs applying use of office workplace computer programs. With a solid foundation in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, as well as strong digital and web literacy skills, students will be better prepared to meet the workforce demands of today’s business environment.

The Certificate is granted to students who have completed at least 12 semester units of the required courses at Glendale Community College. All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better, or a “P” grade.

Program Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this program, students will be able to produce basic business correspondence and reports with appropriate formatting using Word; maintain an office calendar for one or more individuals; develop simple spreadsheets with charting; discuss computer equipment and programming system needs; troubleshoot basic computer problems; and communicate, make informed decisions, and handle personnel problems in office environments.
