This degree or certificate prepares students with the essential knowledge and skills
needed to succeed in a medical office or clinic setting. The curriculum covers key
administrative functions, including patient reception and scheduling, medical documentation
and word processing, insurance validation and coding, supply and equipment management,
and electronic health record maintenance. Students will also develop professional
communication skills, learn to navigate HIPAA regulations, and gain hands-on experience
in multitasking within a fast-paced healthcare environment. Completers will be prepared
to effectively support physicians and healthcare teams in delivering quality patient
care.
The Associate of Science degree is granted to students who have completed at least
12 semester units of the required 60-degree applicable semester units at Glendale
Community College. The required 60 semester units must include all of the following:
(1) Completion of the courses required in the major or area of emphasis with a grade
of “C” or better, or a “P” grade. (2) Completion of one of the following general education
patterns: GCC General Education Requirements or the California General Education Transfer
Curriculum (Cal-GETC) requirements. (3) A minimum GPA of 2.0 in the required 60 semester
units.
The Certificate is granted to students who have completed at least 12 semester units
of the required courses at Glendale Community College. All courses must be completed
with a grade of “C” or better, or a “P” grade.
Program Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this program, students will be able to perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, maintaining patient
records (paper and electronic), and utilization of computer software; communicate
effectively with patients, physicians, and co-workers and serve as a liaison between
the physician and others; apply HIPAA rules in regard to privacy and display ethical,
responsible, and professional behavior; and demonstrate the ability to educate patients
on general office policies, including insurance procedures, reimbursement processes,
billing, and coding practices, while accurately identifying and applying medical terminology
related to the human body systems.
