Mentoring Men of Color

  

 

GCC Student Equity Mentoring Programs LogoThe Mentoring Men of Color (MMC) Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to participate in an outcomes-based mentorship delivered through a collaborative mentor-mentee partnership. The ultimate goal of the experience is to support our students’ growth in their areas of interest, promote opportunities for self-discovery and leadership, and provide brave spaces for mentors and mentees to be creative and inspire change. This program is unique in that it requires an interactive, activity-based mentor/mentee partnership.

Goals & Objectives

The program is designed to enhance sense of self, highlight community cultural wealth, and increase sense of belonging as mentors and mentees work together on projects over the course of a year.

Objectives of the program are designed with the following outcomes in mind:

  • Cultivate Personal Self-Confidence: Confidence in the ability to perform life tasks
  • Highlight Locus of Control: Sense of control and responsibility over academic future
  • Enhance Self-Esteem: Realizing self-worth and value
  • Enhance Sense of Belonging: Experiencing an environment of support, affirmation, and perceived value from faculty and staff
  • Highlight Racial Affinity: Positive racial regard and feeling of connection to my racial/ethnic community
  • Appreciation for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
  • Improve Communication and Leadership
  • Support Motivation to succeed
  • Nurture and enhance cultural wealth

Marketing material designed for students encouraging them to seek help and creation of QR codes for resources on campus.

Creation of a short promotional video for the Library's Research Help Desk service. Outcomes include developing storyboards and script, discovering library resources and services, selecting appropriate video tools and creating the video.

Conflict Resolution

Heliazar created a Conflict Resolution presentation and presented it to learning community students. This included learning about why individuals may avoid conflict from a historical and cultural lens and how folks can utilize strategies to navigate conflicts in academia as well as how to communicate more effectively through conflict resolution.

Community Cultural Wealth

Mentor and mentee presented at the 2019 GCC IDEAS Conference. They facilitated a session exploring Yosso's Community Cultural Wealth model and how it can be used to illuminate the knowledge, skills, networks, and abilities men of color bring to institutions of higher education.

Using Human-Centered Design to study the experiences and needs of parenting students

Joram and Aarin used the five phases of Human-Centered Design (empathize, define, ideate, protype, and test) to design parenting student programs for GCC. Using his interest in sociology, Joram conducted interviews with students, and then led a team of student workers in creating recommendations for the CalWORKs Program.

Photography Club

Eduardo worked to re-create the GCC Photography club and to publicize photography and the arts through the club’s activities. He learned the process of navigating bureaucratic challenges and to network with professors, managers, and other students to create support for his vision.
Julie Gamberg Robert Tarango Linguistic Justice Practice in Community College and Beyond GCC Conference Website Created a webpage for Glendale College's Linguistic Justice Conference with graphics, information, and hyperlinks to registration and additional information. 
Nareh Manooki and Christopher Herwerth Guia Marie Cipriano, Lucia Castillo, and Alphonso Gonzalez  Go Baby Go! In partnership with the nonprofit Go Baby Go!, the MSTEM Engineering team modified a ride-on toy car to accommodate children with cerebral palsy and presented it to the recipient at the end of the year.
 Francisco Gago  Alexa Chung Exploring the Evolutionary Loss of Cervical Vertebrae in Deep-Sea Dragonfishes (Stomiiformes) Using a Clearing and Staining Technique Alex learned how to use a clearing and staining technique, where muscle tissue is digested using trypsin (a protease), while differentially staining bone and cartilage using alizarin red and alcian blue, respectively.  This technique makes the fishes transparent, so their skeleton can be studied under a dissecting microscope.  He compared the structure of the cervical vertebrate in Stomiiformes with several outgroups in order to understand the evolutionary loss of cervical vertebrae.
