An IRS Tax Transcript is an official record from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that shows information from a federal tax return, including reported income and tax information. A Verification of Non-Filing confirms that the IRS does not have a processed federal tax return on record for the requested tax year.

The Financial Aid Office may request one of these documents to verify tax or income information as part of the financial aid review process. The specific document and tax year required will depend on your financial aid application and individual circumstances.

How to Obtain Your IRS Documentation

You must obtain an IRS Tax Transcript or a Verification of Non-Filing from the IRS for the requested tax year. You may complete this in one of the following ways:

The IRS online service is generally the fastest way to obtain tax transcripts and other available tax records.

  1. Visit the IRS Get Your Tax Record page and select Get Transcript Online.
  2. Sign in to your existing IRS Individual Online Account or create an account if you do not already have one.
  3. Complete the identity verification steps required by the IRS.
  4. Once signed in, navigate to your available Tax Records or Transcripts.
  5. Select the document requested by the Financial Aid Office. This may include:
    • Tax Return Transcript – shows most information reported on your original federal tax return.
    • Wage and Income Transcript – shows information reported to the IRS on forms such as W-2s and 1099s.
    • Verification of Non-Filing Letter – confirms that the IRS does not have a processed federal tax return on record for the requested year.
  6. Select the correct tax year listed in your financial aid requirements.
  7. Download or print the requested IRS document.
  8. Review the document to make sure the correct tax year and document type were selected.
  9. Submit the document to the GCC Financial Aid Office using the appropriate document submission method.

Important: A Verification of Non-Filing Letter does not confirm that you were not required to file a tax return. It only confirms that the IRS does not have a processed return on file for that year.

If the requested document or tax year is not available online, use Option 2: Form 4506-T.

Use IRS Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, if you cannot obtain the required documentation online or if the IRS instructs you to submit the form.

  1. Download the current Form 4506-T directly from the IRS website.
  2. Enter the taxpayer's name and Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) exactly as they appear on the tax record.
  3. If the requested tax information was filed jointly, enter the spouse's information where requested.
  4. Enter your current mailing address.
  5. If the address on your most recently filed tax return is different from your current address, enter the previous address where requested.
  6. Select the type of IRS record you need.
    • For a tax transcript, follow the form instructions for the appropriate transcript type.
    • For proof that no tax return was filed, select the option for Verification of Non-Filing.
  7. Enter the correct tax year or period requested by the Financial Aid Office. Follow the date format shown on the current Form 4506-T.
  8. Review the entire form carefully. Incomplete or illegible requests may be rejected by the IRS.
  9. Read the certification statement and complete the required signature section. Do not submit an unsigned form.
  10. Use the current IRS Where to File Form 4506-T instructions to determine the correct mailing address or fax number. The destination is based on the state associated with the tax return.
  11. Mail or fax the completed Form 4506-T directly to the IRS.
  12. Once the IRS sends the requested transcript or Verification of Non-Filing, review it to confirm that you received the correct document and tax year.
  13. Submit the requested IRS documentation to the GCC Financial Aid Office.

Important: Form 4506-T is submitted to the IRS, not Glendale Community College.
