What are the requirements to become a sports coach?

There is no licensing requirement for sports coaches in CA, however most athletic organizations require a minimum of a high-school diploma or equivalent, plus several years of experience in the sport and a current CPR/AED certification. Coaching at the college level, university level and professionally may require an AS degree, BS or MS degree, or some combination of a degree and years of experience (more advanced degrees require fewer years of experience). The most important knowledge, skills and abilities in coaching athletes of all ages and abilities are covered in GCC's Sports Coaching Certificate, and students are highly encouraged to seek out internships as volunteer coaches for their chosen sport(s).
