Degrees, Degrees for Transfer and Certificates each offer a particular type of proof to the public of what you have learned and the requirements, including amount of classes and credits differ for each.  Below you will find general  descriptions of each degree and some other useful terminology.

Associates of Arts Degree (AA): An undergraduate degree awarded after a 2-3 year period of study. This is a stand-alone degree, with certain course qualifications designated by the department.  Associates of Arts degree classes don’t take transfer classes or credits into considerations.

Associate of Science for Transfer (AA-T) An undergraduate degree that is fully transferable to CSU with junior standing and is no more than 60 semester units.  Many of the classes are the same as an AA except that  the AA-T maximizes those classes that transfer to that 4 year college or university.

Occupational Skills Certificates: These certifications are designed to develop job skills in a special area of occupational education within a short period of time. Completion may certify that you are prepared with job entry skills. People already established in careers may get certs to improve their pay scale or advance their careers.

The movement of students from one institution to another with some level of coursework completed (coursework, grades or exams). Transfers include the movement of academic course credits from one college to another.

To find out if classes you've taken at GCC transfer to a particular four-year school you can use this website:    assist.org

ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS: Some community college and a four-year institution create agreements about which classes (and credits) will transfer (articulate) from the CC to a Four year.  The benefit to you is that, if school you want to transfer to has articulation agreements between their film/media program and our Film,Television and Media Arts department, you are ensured certain classes will be waived.
