What Can I Do NOW to Prepare for IOTL?

  • Do you know how to do the following in Canvas as an Instructor?

    • Customize your Canvas profile and notification preferences to fit your needs
    • Create and archive announcements to keep your students engaged and updated
    • Develop modules to organize your content most effectively
    • Design a welcoming, impactful home page, welcome letter, and syllabus
    • Set up a discussion, quiz, and/or assignment exactly the way you want
    • Use a variety of communication tools to streamline contact with students
    • Know how to collaborate, copy, and share materials in Canvas
    • Use the SpeedGrader tool to make grading fast and easy

    If not, please complete the Growing with Canvas @GCC: Self-Paced Course Worth 10 Flex Hours Before Registering for IOTL.

    It is highly recommend that the FREE Self-Paced "Growing with Canvas" Introductory Course is completed before taking the Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning (IOTL) course - GCC'S DE Certification Course. This will give you an overview of Canvas and how to use it.

  • Block Out Time for IOTL. This is a rigorous, interactive, professional development course with multiple due dates each week. You will be applying what you learn while building a course in Canvas, and this takes time. Please plan accordingly so that time limitations do not prevent you from reaching your goals. It is estimated that this course will take 40 hours to complete; however, this time-commitment will vary depending on your Canvas knowledge and understanding of DE course design principles, effective practices, and policies.
